'Melbourne Club Culture Memes' / Interview with the admins

Melbourne Club Culture Memes has been a staple Instagram page for Melbourne’s underground club goers for a few years now. Using wit and satire, MCCM has highlighted the fatal flaws in Melbourne’s commercial club scene while also allowing for the public to submit their own DIY memes on topics such as Revs, IV Suit Sunday, pingers and the bros. Always light hearted yet engaged, MCCM has become the Melbourne scene’s very own Gossip Girl.

Marie Heloury interviews the MCCM posse during the lacklustre lockdown period to remind us of the best and worst of clubbing in Melbourne.

What were the reasons for taking on a Gossip Girl-like persona for this meme account?

GG broadcasts truths that might be recognised as the audience's "inner thoughts". She also gives her community a platform to expose their dirty laundry in a concealed manner. She values anonymity via shared U.N.I.T.Y amongst her following <3

In what ways do you identify as Gossip Girl?

tbh we are self-proclaimed self roaster's who are connected within the club industry, like how GG is within NY elite social scene. Our scope is so broad it is difficult for people to try & pinpoint who we are specifically. It has been pretty hilarious to sit back and listen to the speculation circulating on who the administrators are. One half of us has ties to a globally recognised figure who has been said to have paved the rave scene.... plus we throw our own events across the state....

What were your motivations for creating a meme platform that comments on Melbourne’s high brow underground scene?

It all started with the countless experiences engaging in pillow talk with some bad dancing "chin-stroking"  (CC: DISCO) vinyl bro who has dragged my music taste through the mud when in hindsight he can't openly admit to appreciating Disclosure..... or even the legacy era of Ministry of Sound.

What do you think the scene kids are up to during isolation?

Refreshing every Boiler Room social media platform.

Do you think the speed demons could have funnelled their energy into creative endeavours or sourdough making?

we are the speed demons. we are mourning and missing the clubs, and the joy that they bring.

Thank you for reading this article. Before you leave the page, we’d like you to take a moment to read this statement.  We are asking our readers to take action and stand with the BIPOC community who fight and endure the oppression and injustice of racial inequality.

Here in ‘Australia’,  Indigenous people are the most incarcerated population on Earth. Countless lives have been murdered by white police, white government policies and this country’s white history, institutionalised colonialism and ongoing racial oppression. Racial injustice continues today under the phoney, self-congratulatory politics of ‘Reconciliation’ and the notion that colonialism is something that must be denied and forgotten, an uncomfortable artefact of the past.

Feeling guilty is not enough. We must take action, pay the rent, educate ourselves and acknowledge that empathy and sorrow for past actions is insufficient if this does nothing to prevent our current reality from extending into the future.

Please consider making donations to the following organisations (the list is so small and the work to be done is so large, do your research to find more grassroots, Indigenous-lead community organisations):
