'Rotate' / Yollks

Yollks returns after a brief musical hiatus with evocative ode to the dance-floor “Rotate”

Naarm producer Elle Tayla has steadily been making a name for herself in the underground dance scene, whether it be producing under her moniker Yollks, running collaborative club night Fluxx or DJ’ing under her given name. Each of her singles showcases production skills astutely more elaborate than the previous, underlining her sagacious eye for all things club music.

“Rotate” begins with droning bass pads while muffled breaks hang overhead and unintelligible robot-processed vocals reimagine it as a sci-fi film soundtrack. While “Rotate” doesn’t feature the sultry pop-punk vocals of ”Charms” that make us swoon, it maintains the same dramatic charisma in its choir-like vocal calls at the drop; the effervescent heavenly climax akin to what I imagine you hear before the end. Though Yollks is not alluding to the final space in “Rotate”, instead her production is a love letter to the indispensable club space.

She comments:

"This space is responsible for enhancing so many different aspects of my life. When I think of the club I think of all the beautiful friendships that have resulted from time spent there. I think of an entirely new world of sound and genre that I would never have known existed otherwise. A place that is responsible for my evolution as a producer, DJ and as an active member of the dance music community.

My new single release is an ode to the safe haven that I assumed would always be available to me, but now isn't."

- Yollks

While we lament the temporary loss of such a welcoming and gratifying space, we can take solace in the fact that club-heads such as Yollks are tucked away somewhere, grinding to produce more dance-floor ready beats in anticipation of the clubs inevitable and blissful reopening.

You can keep up to date with Yollks on Soundcloud, Spotify and Facebook.

Thank you for reading this article. Before you leave the page, we’d like you to take a moment to read this statement.  We are asking our readers to take action and stand with the BIPOC community who fight and endure the oppression and injustice of racial inequality.

Here in ‘Australia’,  Indigenous people are the most incarcerated population on Earth. Countless lives have been murdered by white police, white government policies and this country’s white history, institutionalised colonialism and ongoing racial oppression. Racial injustice continues today under the phoney, self-congratulatory politics of ‘Reconciliation’ and the notion that colonialism is something that must be denied and forgotten, an uncomfortable artefact of the past.

Feeling guilty is not enough. We must take action, pay the rent, educate ourselves and acknowledge that empathy and sorrow for past actions is insufficient if this does nothing to prevent our current reality from extending into the future.

Please consider making donations to the following organisations (the list is so small and the work to be done is so large, do your research to find more grassroots, Indigenous-lead community organisations):
